A Made in France 'Halal test' to check for pork

A French company has developed a so-called "Halal test" which will allow Muslim consumers to detect, within a matter minutes, the presence of pork or alcohol in food.

Priced at €6,90 each or €125 for a packet of 25, a device, simply called "Halal test", is designed for use by Muslims who, under the dietary requirements of their religion are forbidden from consuming pork and alcohol, Le Nouvel Observateur reported.

Simply Asia

Simply Asia

Simply Asia

Posted: 23 Oct 2014 02:52 PM PDT

Simply Asia is part of Cape Thai Restaurants which also holds Wang Thai and Chai Yo as part of the group. They do quite simply some of the best Thai noodles among other Thai dishes I have ever had. Meals are are hard to pronounce in the authentic Thai so they have devised an easy and clever number system for each of their dishes.  The 514 (roasted chilli paste and cashew nut noodles) is by far the most popular and I have yet to find someone who has eaten there who hasn't loved it.  They also have great rice dishes and their sweetcorn cakes starter with sweet chilli sauce is absolutely yum. Prices are fairly reasonable and range from R40 for a soup to from R57 to R98 for a main dish. Duck is usually their most expensive and I just spotted a newcomer on the menu, Roasted duck lightly dusted with tempura flour, fried, sliced and topped with a sweet roasted chilli tamarind sauce with broccoli, celery, mushrooms and a portion of fragrant Jasmine rice (or the 267 for short) that sounds too yummy not to head over very soon.

Pearl Spoon, Claremont

Pearl Spoon, Claremont

Pearl Spoon, Claremont

Pearl Spoon is a suave and tasteful venue for light meals, brunches with the girls, and tea time treats. Or coffee, cos they make a really good coffee. It's a family run business, owned by 2 brothers, Jody and Sean and their sister Hayley Deedat. The decor is glam and upmarket and the food is equally well presented. Upon entering the restaurant you are greeted by a beautifully arranged table of desserts, cakes and sweet treats. It sets the tone for wondering what you'll have after your meal cos it's fairly difficult to forget once you've set your eyes on it. There is a nook with couches and armchairs and sparkly chandeliers festoon the ceiling. The sounds of easy jazz fill the air as you are seated in the unusually busy for a week morning but obviously popular little venue.

Mezbaan Halaal Certificate change

There is a message going around on social media that Mezbaan and Bistro 126 at the Hiilton Hotel in Cape Town has had their halaal certificate withdrawn. I see it stated on the Sanha website as well and have enquired as to why but have not yet had a reply.

Little Wings Gallery - Islamic Art for Children

Little Wings Gallery - Islamic Art for Children

Little Wings Gallery - Islamic Art for Children

Posted: 12 Oct 2014 11:49 PM PDT

I discovered a site online that does beautiful contemporary Islamic art for children. It's a great source for finding meaningful and well designed art for your children's rooms or for your home in general.

Little Wings Gallery was born out of a desire to help parents teach their children about Islam and has evolved with contemporary, educational designs to appeal to all ages. A little about the designer behind the art. Cherie is a Melbourne based Graphic Designer with over 10 years experience in Design and Strategic Branding. Putting her professional career on hold in 2012 to stay at home with her young children, Cherie later decided to combine her love of Islam and design by becoming the founder and creative behind "Little Wings Gallery".

Watch Yvonne's Q & A Video Tips, Take the American Muslim Consumer Advocacy Survey

Dear reader,

I get so many wonderful questions from readers every day that I decided it would be fun to put the answers in a video format on my YouTube Channel. The videos are all on MyHalalKitchen.com. You can also see the latest video below if you click on the link above our logo that says, "view this newsletter in your browser".  Please let me know how you like and if you have any more questions, feel free to email me at contact@myhalalkitchen.com.

On another note, I'd love it if you could help out with this pretty important survey called the American Muslim Consumer Advocacy Survey. It's designed to help companies understand how they can best serve Muslim Americans, in total who have an estimated $124 billion in disposable income (according to a 2011 Dinar Standard study).

Please take just a few minutes to fill out the survey and let these companies know your needs. I'd really appreciate if you could also share this survey with everyone in your network, too:  https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/9Y7LV3X

About Dinar Standard

Dinar Standard is a professional research and advisory firm focused on the global Islamic market. They're running an American Muslim Consumer Advocacy Survey across the country, aiming to develop a fact-based voice of the community's consumption needs and the current US Halal Finance/Education/Lifestyle sector to serve.

The study results will be exclusively released at the 5th American Muslim Consumer Conference (AMCC) on November 15, 2014. An executive summary will be released to the public then and will be made available through the Dinar Standard website. For every survey filled, $1 will also be donated to the charity Islamic Relief USA.

Thank you so much for participating!

Again, here is the survey link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/9Y7LV3X

Frozen Yoghurt - Halaal favourites

Frozen Yoghurt - Halaal favourites

Posted: 10 Oct 2014 01:42 AM PDT

You're either a frozen yoghurt person or you're an ice cream person. My husband Zulfikar is the biggest froyo junkie I've ever met. He will find any excuse to dig in to a tub, with sprinkles... always with sprinkles. We can never exit a mall without stopping at Marcel's first. It's his after shopping treat.... cos after shopping with me he needs a treat, or so he says. Actually, it's his after dinner treat too, and after movies, and... well pretty much after everything. And he's turning our son into a little froyo junkie too. Recently our little 1 and a half year old hijacked his medium (and that's big for a 1 year old) English Toffee sugar cone with mini smarties in the middle and promptly polished it off! We had to stop and sit down to contain the fallout of this little 1 year old trying to manage this huge cone by himself (cos any effort to help resulted in screaming in case we took it away). We got some sideways looks from people passing by but it was huge fun to watch how much this little boy enjoyed one of life's little pleasures.

You wouldn't think that ice cream or frozen yoghurt would need a halaal certificate but did you know that besides the alcohol in some flavours which would make it haraam, sometimes Gelatine is used in ice cream to help it to set. And not all ice cream carry halaal certification.
