I'm reposting this one from way back because lets face it, who doesn't have time for the best hot chocolate in Cape Town? And if you know of any better, do share because it will have to be pretty special to beat the one from Myatt.
The first thing I thought of when I walked past Myatt was of Paris. The style and decor reminded me so much of my trip to the city of romance that I simply could not pass up an opportunity to relive the experience.

The location of the cafe is rather incongruous and unexpected. It fills a triangular space where shopping aisle meets passage to the hotel. The little space is very well used and dramatically decorated in a vintage meets modern Parisian style. You can't help gawking a little at the beautiful designer melting chandeliers, Eileen side tables, the walnut tables embossed in metal with Myatt's logo and the clear perspex hanging chair in one corner. The urge to try out the hanging chair seems irresitible to most patrons as it's always been occupied whenever I've been there. The island consol in the middle of the shop is topped with a tray of glasses and water jug filled with slices of lemon and mint leaves floating in icy water ready for the thirsty customer, and flanked by 2 designer Vitra wire chairs sporting bright purple cushions. The modern decor is offset by beautiful crockery from Villeroy and Boch and old world charm in the form of sugar cubes in china bowls with little tongs to grasp them.

The food is light and interesting. Breakfast is mostly continental, croissants and scones being the order of the day. You won't find a fried egg on this menu. Light meals in the way of gourmet sandwiches and savoury tarts do for lunch and dinner. The word sandwhich doesn't really do justice to the affair placed in front of you. Roast chicken with wild rocket and watercress, toasted cashew nuts, grilled vegetables and a mango atchaar viniagrette... the description on the menu alone makes my mouth water. They also do a high tea with lot's of little delectables to choose from.

Just across the passage the other half of the cafe is dedicated to a little chocolate shop selling imported chocolates specially made for Myatt. The chocolates are available to try on the cafe menu as well, just be sure to ask for a price before you order, as these little gems hit your pocket pretty hard. The "piece de resistance" is the variety of coffee and teas. There are several unusual blends of tea available but what does it for me everytime is the most divine mocha which is a hot chocolate with a shot of espresso. They also have the most incredible desserts and is the perfect place for coffee and dessert after a meal.

Price-wise they are on the higher end of the scale but in my opinion it's worth it. Also not very child friendly. Perhaps too posh for the kids.

Myatt is also a great choice for a small corporate function or cosy get together. For those needing catering, they offer scrumptious three or five course set menus or a delightful canapé menu to choose from. For bookings, and more information, please contact myattcafechocolatier@myatt.co.za
